By 1881, Darwin had written seven major books on pollinating mechanisms, insectivorous plants, the power of movement in plants and orchid biology. During the next months, you can discover examples of Darwin’s studies and the supporting evidence for his theory that natural selection is the driving force of evolving life.
What were Darwin’s key ideas and how are modern scientists using them? Who was Darwin? Try this video clip that features Dr. Andrew Hipp, Plant Systematist and Herbarium Curator at The Morton Arboretum speaking about the implications of Darwin’s work on his own research. And we have more. Click here for questions, answers, videos and a whole new learning experience! The year 2009 marks the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s ground-breaking book, On the Origin of Species. The library staff asked modern-day scientists to answer frequently asked questions about Darwin, his theory of evolution by natural selection and, perhaps most interesting, the relevance of his ideas for researchers today. Check out the new mini-web site on Darwin for more information about the exhibit.
From June 30, 2009 – January 31, 2010, The Sterling Morton Library features “Darwin’s Flowers: Unlocking Natural Selection.”
